I’ve been thinking about music and writing. For me, they go hand-in-hand. I'll hear a song, and a scene I've been working on will evolve, become better than it was before. Music is my muse. Albert Einstein said, “I often think in music. I live my daydreams in music. I see my life in terms of music.” When I wrote Asylum, there were many songs I listened to that helped me write. I have specific songs for certain chapters. I thought it would be fun to list a few (not in any particular order), so here goes!
Asylum Playlist
1. Young Volcanoes by Fall Out Boy – Chapter 4
2. Broken by Lifehouse – Chapter 2
3. Black Butterflies and Déjà Vu by The Maine – Chapter 13
4. Don’t Go Away by Oasis - Chapter 22
5. Sunrise by Our Last Night – Chapter 2
6. Monster by Starset – Chapter 27
7. I Only Wanna Talk to You by The Maine – Chapter 31
This is by no means a complete list. There are certain bands that also inspired me.
§ Hollywood Undead – Their album, Notes from the Underground, is great! It inspired me when I had trouble writing scenes like the one where Jace kidnaps the governor and when Lacy and Travis light the pipe bomb to get Jace and Bryan out of jail. I think some of that was cut during final edits though.
§ Oasis – I just love this band and wish they were still together. What’s the Story Morning Glory? is an album I’ll never get tired of listening to.
§ Sleeping With Sirens – The lead singer Kellin Quinn is just pretty 😊 There’s an amazing YouTube video of them covering the song Iris (Goo Goo Dolls)!
§ Shinedown – All their albums are gold.
§ Twin Atlantic – I love the Scotsman, Sam McTrusty’s, accent! Who wouldn’t?
§ Switchfoot – This band has been inspiring me for many years. I would love to see them in concert!
§ The 1975 – This band is new to me, but I like the songs, Robbers, and Somebody Else.
§ Lifehouse – My all-time favorite, go-to band!
